We enjoy heavily modifying starlets, anything turbo, n/a builds, fabrication and racing. I love hearing what my viewers have to say so if you have any ideas or advice please don't be shy!!
Prepping this for 46 psi of boost
Roll racing is on this weekend and we have Andrew Hawkins coming up from Sydney to cover our event. We decided its time to get most of our cars out and onto the racetrack. We finally figured out the problem with the pulsar and made it FAST!

For a long time we have been wanting to do a compound setup and today we went a bit overboard with the sizing. It actually works so sick. The turbo is the PSR PRO106. (G57-3000)

A couple of months ago we put together this absolute masterpiece and wanted to see how much boost it could handle before breaking. It eventually did stop working but we already have a huge parts list to make it even better. If you have any ideas let us know in the comments!

New subscriber here lads. Algorithm spat me straight over from Skid Factory. Absolutely love it lads, keep up the sick work. It's quite possible I'm experiencing a similar phenomenon in my turbo Suzuki Sierra. Runs about the same when cold or hot, but doesn't seem to make anymore power after 15psi. Have thrown 25psi at it and it seems to make a lot more noise... but doesn't pull any harder. Has built bottom end. Lightly ported cylinder head but stock cams and springs 🤔.
If only you could plum it into the intake and utalize the boost 😅... still cool idea tho guys 🤘🏽💪🏽🤙🏽✌🏽.. peace and love guys, keep it rad, stay safe, and build on.. l8r famz and keep having fun
Wait, I was like why start the first weld showing a tig welder then doing mig welding, then on stainless pipe start off with mig but then weld with the tig? Had me confused and then laughing, nogals cool..
Then I keep watching and it happens again on the backwards welded flange... Why?
u want some engine with that turbo?
what kit is that
I wish/need friends like Matt Berry and Nick. Im pretty nuch doing the rest of my build on my own now.
intercooling between the stages works really well btw ;)
Funny thing is though our air temps aren’t much higher than with one turbo 🤷♂️🤷♂️
Love it that the hammer has a pink cloth on to protect the paint, but the fender looks like a crispy piece of bacon
Lmfao
This is quickly becoming my favourite UA-cam channel
Let’s go !!! 😜👍🇦🇺
Ive learned quite a bit from these vids and seeing the builds come together 👍
Thanks dude more to come!!
Remind everyone, boost psi is a measure of how much air that is Not going into the combustion chamber. It is pressure built up in the intake manifold
The mad dogs strike again!!
does each turbo have a wastegate or is there only 1 wastegate on the smaller turbo?
Only one
@@MattBerrymotorsport thanks. ive been wondering if compound setups used one or two as ive been thinking about trying it myself.. by any chance do you know the formula for boost calculation?
Yo if that’s really sir, David Attenborough, I fucking applaud you 🫡 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Just makes his video 10 times better ha ha ha ha
Don’t believe everything you hear on the internet 😂 Thanks mate 🙏🙏
Great to see the progression on this high end build. It will be great at Cootamundra next year.
Conversation hasn’t even come up yet but I’m liking it already 😂
Pumped for some rollies!
Crazy
I feel like you lads and MCM doing a budget turbo build in collab would be absolute chaos.. 😂💥
Hate to sound cocky, but we would smoke #mcm
@@MattBerrymotorsport for sheer ballsyness, disregard for self preservation and ingenuity when it comes to making a turbo do anything with anything, absolutely 😂 I'm now too drunk to say anything more amusing though. #IrishOut
Your going to need more boost that that bud. its compound now so that means the turbo speeds be running at pressure ratio of 2:! aka 1 bar of boost.
That’s not how that works hp turbo compounds the air from low pressure, so lp makes 4-5psi and final boost is 40psi then the hp is increasing pressure by a factor of 10
@@turkeyboyjh1 your sooooo wrong
I’m no compound guru, but It’s never spun the wheels in third gear before and now it’s bouncing off the limiter in third and sprayed oil out of the catch can all over the firewall. I think we have enough boost.
The turbo wheel speed of the smaller one has actually come down 20,000rpm and it’s clearly making way more power
@@MattBerrymotorsport yep more density at the inlet of the wheel means more resistance so it would make a sense to see less shaft speed
I hope you won't stop making content. Seems other car channels are shutting down 😢
It’s been a while, but having run that sort of boost (it was a Volvo 480 1.7 turbo) a hybrid t3/t4 at 42psi, then into an inter-inter cooler then Eaton m45 supercharger, then another inter cooler giving 52psi tops. Breaking 50psi, that starts to get pretty tricky, I ended up ceramic coating the whole combustion chamber, the head, and the pistons (it is a flat head/in piston combustion chamber design) down to the second ring land. Sodium filled exhaust valves too, or they just burn up. The engine didn’t blow up, I still have it. If you want any info, happy to share
The compound setup with a supercharger, it massively improves the time till the main turbo comes on boost, worth at least thinking about. It is also good for drivability, but adds to the screaming howling noise.
Haha in a volvo 480? Where do you come from?
@@pim24599 In the UK, yes why not. It was fun watching porche drivers gnawing the steering wheel and willing their car to go faster...
Hey thanks for the info. What fuel were you using? Funny thing with out setup is the air temps at the intake manifold are just above ambient (38 Celsius) at 46 psi only using one front mount intercooler. Every other compound setup I’ve seen has problems with air temps being too high. We are still running stock exhaust and intake valves in this 😂💪💪
@@MattBerrymotorsport Fuel was 99 octane ‘super unleaded’ but adding toluene up to 25% improves power (I was running a knock sensor) I had mostly stock internal stuff, the pistons I machined myself, to drop the compression a bit, I opened the ports up a bit. I enlarged the piston oil spray jets a bit, and upped the oil pressure. I had to use a cooler before the supercharger, those can’t cope with high input temperatures, my final inter cooling was the same size as the radiator, I never had temperature issues either, like you just above ambient. 42psi was no problem with stock everything, but breaking 50 it started getting difficult. Part of the problem is the heat flux, trying to conduct the heat away. That’s where ceramic coating helps, it holds the heat in the combustion chamber, because aluminium oxide is refractory, the surface also cools much faster with the incoming charge, that reduces the detonation threshold. The valves took a hit after that, sodium filled valves obviously conduct much more heat away, that fixed it. Several engines had various parts melted, it gets tedious swapping out pistons, ceramic coating absolutely fixed that (the process used was keronite, the aluminium oxide is formed from the aluminium of the piston, so it can’t fall off) the head was just plasma sprayed, including the gasket mating surfaces, it actually grips the gasket much better (it has texture like 1200grit or finer sandpaper). All this was done in a shed in rural Somerset, the same method as you, try stuff and fix things when they break. Lots of odds and ends, adding extra engine mounts (I put 2 at the top of the engine, attached to a beefy strut brace) and reinforced the existing rear mount (those are known for being weak with normal power). If I can pass on anything that helps, hopefully it saves you some trial and error. Good luck with the project.
New subscriber and you guys are awesome!! Crazy what these motors can take! Also definitely keep the videos coming I can see you guys being the new Boosted bois!! Haha!
The twin starlet is so cool man
3:21 haha :D it would be easier to get compression tester hose hooked up but w/e :D putting cylinder to tdc is also good safe measure
The algorithm got me here, I'm loving your work Lads and will be sharing the channel.
So good keep up the good work one of the better channel around

Massive contrast to cleatus who pays everyone and uses big dollar stuff now.
@@Low760 I agree. I was subbed at the beginning of his channel and while I think it's great he made a name for himself, I really miss what it was like when he first started out. Fortunately I got camp dogs to fill that void now and I love what they do.

Don’t happen to have a part number for the valve springs? 😅 Think I snagged the last set of available H beam rods on the internet for the GA16. Did you guys have to clearance the block to run them?
Part number is PS1005 Make sure you tell them we sent you! You don’t have to clearance the block for the rods, but you will have to clearance the main girdles… As long as you have around 1mm of clearance it will be perfectly fine. Ours is about half a mm 😂🤙
